Air Today Heating & Cooling has been installing whole-home air purifiers throughout Greenville and the Upstate for over 45 years, and our local climate is one reason these systems make so much sense here.

Most Upstate homes stay sealed and air-conditioned for the majority of the year, which means the same indoor air recirculates through your HVAC system thousands of times. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, and standard filters only catch what passes through them. Whole-home air purifiers go further by actively treating the air and surfaces throughout your home, neutralizing bacteria, viruses, mold spores, and odors that filters and UV lights alone cannot reach.

When you call us out, we walk through your home, ask what your family is actually dealing with, and assess your existing HVAC system before recommending any equipment. From there, we recommend the system that fits your situation. If your indoor air issue can be solved with a better filter, a UV light at the coil, or duct sealing, we will recommend that instead.

We show up on time, install the unit cleanly inside your ductwork, and walk you through how the system works and when the cell needs to be replaced before we leave. That approach has kept us in business for nearly five decades, and it is why homeowners across Greenville keep calling us back for air purifier installations, IAQ upgrades, and everything else their HVAC systems throw at them.

Benefits of a Whole-Home Air Purifier

  • Active treatment in every room. Unlike filters and UV lights that only treat air passing through one specific point in your system, a whole-home air purifier releases ionized hydrogen peroxide molecules into your conditioned space. These molecules travel through every room, neutralizing contaminants in the air and on surfaces wherever your HVAC system distributes air.
  • Reduction of bacteria, viruses, and mold spores. Whole-home air purifiers significantly reduce airborne microorganisms by breaking them down at the cellular level. This matters in Greenville where summer humidity creates ideal conditions for mold and bacteria growth inside HVAC systems and throughout the home.

  • Elimination of VOCs, odors, and smoke. Volatile organic compounds from cleaning products, paint, new furniture, cooking, and pets create indoor air pollution that filters cannot remove. Air purifiers break down these molecules into harmless components, which eliminates pet odors, cooking smells, smoke residue, and chemical off-gassing instead of just masking them.

  • Allergy and asthma trigger reduction. Pollen, dust mite waste, mold spores, and pet dander are common triggers that filtration alone cannot fully address. A whole-home air purifier reduces both airborne and surface allergens, which provides real relief for households with sensitive members.

  • Surface contamination reduction. Most air quality products only treat the air. Whole-home air purifiers also reduce contaminants on countertops, doorknobs, light switches, and other high-touch surfaces by dispersing purification molecules throughout the conditioned space.

  • Zero ozone, mercury-free operation. Modern whole-home air purifiers like the REME HALO-LED are zero-ozone certified to the UL 2998 standard, CARB compliant, and contain no mercury. This addresses the legitimate concern about older ionization systems that emitted ozone, which is a respiratory irritant.

Our Whole-Home Air Purifier Installation Process

  • Assessment and home walkthrough. We start by walking through your home, asking about specific air quality concerns (allergies, odors, mold, illness), inspecting your HVAC system and ductwork, and reviewing any existing IAQ equipment you already have. This gives us a clear picture of what you actually need before recommending any system.
  • System selection and recommendation. We compare the REME HALO and REME HALO-LED side by side with you, explaining the differences in cell life (2 years vs 4.5 years), operation mode (continuous UV vs HVAC-synced LED), and total cost of ownership. If a different brand or technology fits your home better, we will recommend that instead.
  • Installation in the supply or return plenum. We install the unit directly in your HVAC ductwork using sheet-metal fittings, typically in the supply plenum where the purifier can disperse molecules into the air being delivered to every room. The installation takes 1 to 2 hours in most homes and does not require modifications to your AC or furnace.
  • Electrical connection and integration. We wire the unit to a dedicated power source on your HVAC system so it runs automatically when the system runs (HALO-LED) or continuously (HALO). The unit is sealed inside the ductwork with no exposure to your living space and no impact on airflow or system efficiency.
  • System test and walkthrough. Once installed, we run your HVAC system through a full cycle to confirm the air purifier is operating, check airflow at every register, and verify the indicator light shows the unit is active. We then walk you through how to monitor the system and when to expect cell replacement.
  • Cell replacement and ongoing maintenance. REME HALO cells last about 2 years and REME HALO-LED cells last about 4.5 years before they need to be replaced. We track your replacement schedule and can handle it during your annual HVAC maintenance visits, so the system stays at full effectiveness without you having to track the timing yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A UV light is installed at the evaporator coil and kills mold, bacteria, and viruses on the coil surface as well as in the air passing directly through the light. A whole-home air purifier is installed in the ductwork and actively releases ionized hydrogen peroxide molecules into your conditioned space, treating the air and surfaces in every room your HVAC system reaches. UV light is reactive and treats one location.

An air purifier is proactive and treats the whole home. Most homeowners with serious IAQ concerns benefit from both technologies working together. We will inspect your home and recommend the right combination based on your specific air quality needs.

Air filters trap physical particles like dust, pollen, pet dander, and lint as air passes through them. Whole-home air purifiers neutralize living contaminants like bacteria, viruses, mold spores, and VOCs that filters cannot remove. The two technologies do different jobs and work best together, not as substitutes. You still need a properly rated filter (we usually recommend MERV 8 to 13 for most homes) to catch physical particles, and you still need to change it on schedule. An air purifier is an addition to your filtration setup, not a replacement.

We will help you configure both correctly during the installation visit so they complement each other.

The REME HALO uses a UV bulb to generate ionized hydrogen peroxide and runs continuously, with the cell needing replacement every 2 years. The REME HALO-LED uses LED technology instead of UV, runs only when your HVAC system runs, and the cell lasts approximately 4.5 years before needing replacement. The HALO-LED is the newer generation, costs more upfront (around $1,100 to $1,400 installed versus $700 to $900 for the standard HALO), but uses less energy and has lower long-term operating costs.

We walk you through both options during the consultation and recommend the one that fits your home and budget rather than defaulting to the most expensive choice.

Yes, whole-home air purifiers actively reduce airborne and surface contaminants when they are installed correctly. The REME HALO and HALO-LED have been tested in independent lab studies to reduce specific bacteria, viruses, mold spores, and VOCs by significant percentages within minutes of treatment. The catch is honest expectations. Air purifiers do not eliminate every contaminant; they do not replace filtration for physical particles, and they work best as part of a full IAQ system that includes a properly rated filter and adequate humidity control.

We will tell you honestly what an air purifier will and will not do for your specific home before recommending one.

A whole-home air purifier can significantly reduce allergy and asthma triggers when the cause is biological contamination like mold spores, bacteria, or dust mite waste circulating through your HVAC system. It also helps with VOCs and odors that aggravate respiratory conditions. For airborne particles such as pollen and pet dander, filtration remains the primary control, and humidity below 50% reduces dust mite populations.

If allergies or asthma are your main concern, we will assess your full IAQ setup and may recommend a combination of an air purifier, a higher-MERV filter, and humidity control, depending on what is actually causing your symptoms.

Yes, whole-home air purifiers are particularly effective on odors because they break down the actual molecules causing the smell instead of masking them with fragrance. Pet odors, cooking smells, smoke residue, and chemical off-gassing from cleaning products or new furniture are all VOC-related and respond well to the hydrogen peroxide treatment from a REME HALO or HALO-LED. You should notice improvement within the first few days of installation. If odors persist beyond two weeks, we will come back to verify the unit is operating correctly and check whether the source needs to be addressed separately.

Modern whole-home air purifiers like the REME HALO and REME HALO-LED are certified zero-ozone under UL 2998 and meet California’s CARB ozone emissions limits. They are mercury-free and run safely inside sealed HVAC ductwork with no exposure to your living space. Older ionization technology from the 1990s and early 2000s did produce ozone, which is a respiratory irritant, and that history is why the question still comes up.

The products we install are not those older units. We can show you the UL 2998 and CARB certifications for any unit we recommend so you know exactly what is going into your home.

The REME HALO cell lasts approximately 2 years before it needs replacement, and the REME HALO-LED cell lasts approximately 4.5 years. Replacement cells run $395 for the HALO and $575 for the HALO-LED, including installation. Both units include a countdown timer that shows when replacement is due, so you do not have to track the schedule yourself. We can fold cell replacement into your annual HVAC maintenance visit so it gets handled as part of your routine service instead of as a separate service call.
