10 Reasons Your AC Is Freezing up & What to Do about It

After more than four decades of providing HVAC services across the Upstate, we’ve seen plenty of air conditioning problems, and one of the most common calls we get in the summer is for an AC system that has frozen up.

Homeowners usually notice something is wrong when they lower the thermostat, wait for the house to cool down, and still feel warm air coming from the vents. Then they check the system and find that the only thing getting cold is the AC unit itself, covered in ice.

It may seem odd for an air conditioner to freeze during summer, but it happens more often than you might think. When the evaporator coil gets too cold, moisture can freeze on it and accumulate into a layer of ice. The cause is often restricted airflow, low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or another issue that keeps the system from absorbing heat properly.

In this article, we’ll walk through the most common reasons an AC unit freezes up, point out which ones you can handle on your own and which ones need a professional, and explain what to do the moment you spot the ice.

Note: If your system is frozen right now, turn it off at the thermostat and set the fan to On so the coil can thaw, and leave it off until the ice is completely gone, because running a frozen unit puts the compressor at risk and can turn a small repair into a far more expensive one.

Common Reasons Your AC Freezes Up

A frozen AC unit is usually a symptom of another issue inside the system. The cause may be something simple you can check yourself, or it may be a sign that the system needs professional service.

Here are eight of the most common reasons an AC freezes up during the summer:

1. A Dirty Air Filter

The air filter is the first thing we check on a frozen system, because a clogged filter is behind more freeze-ups than any other single cause. Your air conditioner depends on a steady flow of warm indoor air passing across the evaporator coil, and that warm air is what keeps the coil from dropping below freezing while it pulls heat out of your home.

When the filter loads up with dust and pet hair, it chokes off that airflow, the coil gets colder than it should, and the moisture collecting on it turns to ice instead of draining away. In a humid Upstate summer, there is even more moisture moving across the coil, so a neglected filter can ice over a system faster here than it would in a drier climate.

This is the one cause almost any homeowner can fix without calling us. Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light; if you cannot see through it, replace it. We tell our customers to check the filter every month during the cooling season and change it at least every 90 days, sooner if you have pets or anyone in the house who has allergies.

Also, make sure the filter is the right size, installed in the correct direction, and not too restrictive for your system. A filter can look clean and still limit airflow if it is the wrong type for the equipment.

Once you put in a clean filter, leave the unit off until the ice has fully melted before you start it again. Otherwise, the airflow problem continues, and the coil simply refreezes.

2. Closed or Blocked Supply Vents

Airflow problems do not always start at the filter. When too many supply vents are closed or blocked, the system loses the warm return air it needs, and the coil freezes for the same reason a dirty filter does.

We often find vents shut in spare bedrooms, or registers hidden behind a couch, a rug, or a set of long curtains. Many homeowners close vents in unused rooms, believing it saves money, but it actually raises the pressure in the ductwork and starves the coil of airflow, which works against the system.

Walk through the house and make sure your supply registers are open and clear, with nothing sitting on top of them or pushed against them. Check return vents too, since your system needs a clear path to pull air back to the air handler.

This is another fix you can handle on your own in a few minutes. If every vent is open and clear and the unit still freezes, the airflow trouble is coming from somewhere deeper in the system, and that is when it makes sense to have a technician check the ductwork or the blower.

3. A Dirty Evaporator Coil

Sometimes the airflow is fine, and the filter is clean, but the coil itself can be the problem. Over months and years, a thin film of dust, grease, and grime settles onto the evaporator coil, even with regular filter changes, and that layer acts like a blanket. It insulates the coil and prevents it from absorbing heat as it should, so the surface temperature drops below freezing and ice begins to form.

A dirty coil is one of the reasons we push so hard on filter maintenance, since a clean filter is what keeps that buildup from forming in the first place.

We do not recommend cleaning the evaporator coil yourself. The coil sits inside the air handler, the fins bend easily, and the wrong cleaner or too much pressure can damage the metal.

When one of our technicians cleans a coil, they remove the access panel, protect surrounding components, and use a coil-safe cleaner that lifts buildup without bending or corroding the fins.

If your filter has been cleaned and the airflow checks out, but the system keeps freezing, a dirty coil is a likely suspect, and that is a good point to bring in a professional.

4. Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is the substance that absorbs heat from your indoor air and carries it outside. Your system runs on a sealed loop of it that should never need topping off. When the level drops, the only explanation is a leak somewhere in the system.

Low refrigerant lowers the pressure inside the evaporator coil, pulling the coil temperature well below freezing and icing it over. If you hear a faint hissing or bubbling near the unit, along with freezing and weak cooling, a refrigerant leak is often the cause.

In some cases, the issue is not just low refrigerant, but a restriction in the refrigerant circuit. A failing metering device or clogged filter drier can create similar pressure problems and cause the coil to freeze.

This repair belongs with a licensed professional, not only because the work is technical. Federal law requires anyone who handles refrigerant to hold an EPA Section 608 certification, so recovering or topping off refrigerant is not something a homeowner can legally do.

A recharge without finding the leak also solves nothing, because the new refrigerant escapes the same way the old charge did. Our technicians locate the leak, repair it, and recharge the system to the correct level, which fixes the freezing at its source instead of buying you a few weeks until it returns.

5. A Failing Blower Motor

Even with a clean filter and open vents, the system still needs something to push air across the coil, and that job belongs to the blower motor inside the air handler.

When the blower weakens, runs at the wrong speed, or the fan wheel gets caked with dirt, it moves too little air over the coil, and the coil freezes the same way it does behind a clogged filter. A motor heading toward failure usually gives you warning signs first, such as weak airflow from every vent, a humming or grinding noise from the air handler, or a fan that struggles to start.

A blower problem requires tools and experience to diagnose. The cause might be a worn motor, a failed capacitor, a dirty fan wheel, or a wiring fault, and a technician can test the motor, measure the airflow, and tell you whether it needs cleaning, a new part, or a full replacement.

If your filter is clean and your vents are open, but the airflow still feels weak, and the coil keeps freezing, the blower is one of the first things we look at.

6. A Clogged Condensate Drain Line

As your air conditioner cools the air, it also pulls moisture out of it, and that water collects in a drain pan and flows out of the house through the condensate drain line. Over time, algae, dirt, and sludge can build up inside that line, blocking it.

A clogged drain line is not always the original cause of the coil freezing, but it can make a frozen AC problem worse once the ice starts melting. When the drain line is blocked, water has nowhere to go, so it backs up into the pan and around the air handler.

You can often clear a minor clog yourself by finding the drain line access near the air handler, pouring a cup of distilled white vinegar through it to break down the buildup, and checking that the line runs clear where it exits outside.

If the line is fully blocked, or if you find standing water in the pan every time the system runs, have us properly flush the line and check the pan and the float switch, because a backed-up drain can shut the system down or cause water damage if you leave it alone.

7. A Faulty Thermostat

The thermostat is the part that tells your air conditioner when to run and when to shut off, so when it stops working correctly, the system can run far longer than it should. A thermostat that fails to signal the unit to cycle off keeps the compressor and coil working without a break, and over a long enough run, the coil drifts colder and colder until ice forms on it.

A thermostat set too low can create a similar problem. Lowering the thermostat far below the indoor temperature will not cool the house faster; it only makes the system run longer. If the unit is already struggling with airflow or refrigerant pressure, those long cycles can make freezing more likely, especially overnight.

Start with the simple checks, since a few thermostat problems are easy to rule out at home. Replace the batteries, confirm the unit is set to cool and not stuck on an odd schedule, and make sure nothing nearby, like a lamp or direct sun, is throwing off its temperature reading.

If the thermostat still will not cycle the system off correctly after that, the fix usually calls for recalibration, rewiring, or replacement, and that is work we can handle quickly.

8. Cool Outdoor Temperatures

Your air conditioner operates within a certain outdoor temperature range, and it runs into trouble when the outside air turns too cool. Once the outdoor temperature drops below about sixty degrees, the pressure inside the system falls, the coil temperature drops with it, and the coil can freeze even when everything else about the unit is working fine.

In the Upstate, this shows up most in spring and fall, when a warm afternoon gives way to a cool evening, and the system keeps cooling even though the outdoor air has already turned too cold for it. The fix here costs nothing.

Avoid running the air conditioner when the outdoor temperature sits in the low sixties or below, and lean on your thermostat schedule so the system is not cooling an already cool house overnight. If the unit freezes on mild days when you are barely running it, something else on this list is the real cause, and it is worth having a technician check it.

9. Leaky or Collapsed Ductwork

Your ductwork is the network of passages that carries return air to the air handler and pushes cooled air back out to your rooms, and it has just as much influence on airflow as the filter or the vents.

When a duct leaks at its seams, pulls loose at a connection, or gets crushed somewhere in an attic or crawlspace, less warm return air reaches the coil. That drop in airflow can let the coil get too cold, allowing moisture on the coil to freeze instead of draining away.

The frustrating part for homeowners is that all of this happens out of sight. The filter may look clean, and every vent may be open, while the real problem sits hidden somewhere in the duct run.

The signs tend to show up as weak airflow throughout the house, rooms that never cool evenly, and cooling bills that climb for no obvious reason. You may also notice that some rooms feel stuffy while others get too cold, which can indicate air leakage or restriction before it reaches the right parts of the home.

This is not something most homeowners can inspect or repair on their own, since much of the ductwork runs through hard-to-reach or poorly lit spaces.

A technician can measure airflow, check static pressure, identify leaks or damage, and then seal, reconnect, or replace the affected sections so the coil gets the air it needs.

10. An Oversized or Poorly Installed System

Sometimes the trouble traces all the way back to the day the system went in. An oversized air conditioner does not always freeze simply because it is too large, but it can create conditions that make freeze-ups more likely, especially when the ductwork, blower speed, or refrigerant charge is not right for the equipment.

A system that is too large for the home cools the air in short, fast bursts and shuts off before it has run long enough to properly remove humidity. That short-cycling pattern can leave the home uncomfortable, and if the system also has airflow or setup issues, the coil may become cold enough to ice over.

We see this most often when a homeowner tells us a brand-new or recently replaced system keeps freezing.

A fresh installation can also freeze for reasons unrelated to size, such as an incorrect refrigerant charge at startup, a blower fan running at the wrong speed, ductwork that cannot handle the new system’s airflow, or construction dust clogging the first filter within weeks.

A technician can confirm the charge, adjust the blower speed, inspect the ductwork, and tell you honestly whether the installer sized the unit correctly for your home in the first place.

How to Keep Your AC From Freezing Up

Almost every cause of an AC unit freezing up comes back to airflow and upkeep, which means a handful of simple habits will prevent most freeze-ups before they start.

None of these takes much time, and together they keep the coil warm enough to do its job through the hottest stretch of an Upstate summer.

  • Change your air filter on a schedule. Check it every month during the cooling season and replace it at least every ninety days, sooner if you have pets or anyone in the home has allergies. A clean filter is the single best defense against a frozen coil.
  • Keep your vents and registers open. Walk through the house now and then to make sure furniture, rugs, and curtains are not blocking the supply and return vents, and resist the urge to close vents in unused rooms, since that only restricts the airflow the system depends on.
  • Set your thermostat to a reasonable temperature. Very low settings held for hours give the coil more chances to freeze, so keep the thermostat no lower than around sixty-eight degrees and let it cycle normally.
  • Watch the weather on cool days. Avoid running the air conditioner when the outdoor temperature drops into the low sixties or below, which tends to happen on spring and fall evenings here in the Upstate.
  • Keep the space around both units clear. Give the indoor air handler room to breathe, and keep leaves, grass clippings, and debris away from the outdoor unit so the whole system can move air freely.
  • Schedule a professional tune-up every spring. A yearly visit before the cooling season lets a technician clean the coil, check the refrigerant charge, test the blower, and catch the small problems that lead to freezing before the heat arrives. This is the step that prevents the most expensive surprises.

Should You Repair or Replace Your AC If It Keeps Freezing Up?

Most of the causes behind a frozen AC turn out to be straightforward repairs. A new filter, a cleared vent, a flushed drain line, or a new thermostat costs very little and keeps the system running normally for years to come.

The harder decision arrives with the larger repairs, such as a refrigerant leak, a new evaporator coil, a failed blower motor, or a compressor, where the cost climbs, and the age of the system starts to weigh on the math.

Age is usually the first thing to consider. Most air conditioners last between 10 and 15 years, so a major repair on a unit near the end of that range often makes less sense than putting the money toward a new, more efficient system. The type of refrigerant matters too, because older units that run on R-22, the refrigerant the industry has phased out, are expensive to recharge and only getting more so, which can tip an aging system toward replacement.

The simplest rule we share with customers is to compare the cost of the repair against the cost of a new system, and when a repair starts to approach a large share of the replacement cost, especially on an older unit that has needed work before, replacement is usually the better long-term choice.

When the system is new or the repair is minor, fixing it is almost always the right call, and there is no reason to spend on a replacement you do not need.
