AC Breaker Keeps Tripping: Causes and How to Fix It

The AC breaker protects your home and your AC unit. When it trips, it cuts power because the system is drawing too much electricity, overheating, or encountering a problem that could become unsafe.

If the breaker keeps tripping, your AC is trying to tell you there’s a problem, and catching it early can help prevent bigger repairs. That might be something simple, like a dirty air filter making the system work too hard, or it could be something more serious, like a failing capacitor, electrical issue, or compressor problem.

Whatever the cause, you should avoid resetting the breaker repeatedly. Each trip under load stresses the compressor, and repeated resets can turn a small repair into a major one.

What to Do First When Your AC Breaker Trips

Before getting into possible causes, we recommend paying attention to when the breaker trips.

If it only tripped once, you may be able to turn the thermostat off, reset the breaker one time, and see if the system starts normally. Sometimes a breaker can trip after a power surge or temporary overload.

But if the breaker trips again, trips right away, or trips every time the AC turns on, don’t keep resetting it. In our experience, that usually means there’s a real issue somewhere in the system. The breaker is doing its job by shutting the power off before the problem becomes more serious.

At that point, the safest thing to do is leave the AC off and have it checked by a professional. Repeatedly resetting the breaker can put more stress on the system and may lead to bigger damage, especially if the problem involves the compressor, wiring, or another electrical component.

You can still do a few quick checks before calling, such as checking the air filter, making sure the vents are open, and confirming the outdoor unit isn’t blocked by leaves, grass, or debris. But avoid opening the AC unit or electrical panel if you’re not trained to work on HVAC equipment.

Common Reasons Your AC Breaker Keeps Tripping

There are several reasons an AC breaker may trip, and some are more serious than others. In our experience, the key is looking at when the breaker trips.

Does it happen as soon as the AC starts? After the system has been running for a while? Only on extremely hot days? Those details can help point us toward the cause. Here are the most common issues we look for.

1. Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter is one of the simplest problems on this list, but it can still cause real issues.

When the filter is packed with dust, pet hair, or debris, your AC has to work harder to pull air through the system. That restricted airflow can put extra strain on the blower motor and cause the system to run hotter than normal. During a long cooling cycle, especially on a hot afternoon, that added strain can sometimes be enough to trip the breaker.

This is one of the first things homeowners can safely check. Turn the system off, pull out the filter, and take a look at it. If it looks dirty or clogged, replace it with a clean one. A good rule of thumb is that if you can barely see light through the filter, it’s time to change it.

If the breaker only tripped once and the filter was very dirty, replacing it may help. But if the breaker trips again after the filter has been changed, there is probably another issue that needs to be checked.

2. Dirty Outdoor Condenser Coils

Your outdoor AC unit releases the heat your system removes from inside your home. To do that properly, the outdoor coil needs good airflow.

When the coil is covered with dirt, grass clippings, leaves, or other debris, the system has a harder time dissipating heat. The compressor may run longer and hotter to keep up, which can increase the electrical load and eventually trip the breaker.

In our experience, this tends to show up more during long run times or very hot weather. The AC may work for a while, then trip the breaker later in the day when the system is under the most stress.

You can safely clear leaves, weeds, and debris from around the outdoor unit. It’s also a good idea to keep plants and shrubs trimmed back so the unit has room to breathe. If the coil itself is very dirty, matted, or clogged, it’s best to have it cleaned professionally. The fins are delicate, and using too much pressure or the wrong cleaner can damage the coil.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coil

A frozen evaporator coil can also lead to breaker problems, especially if the system keeps running while airflow is restricted.

The evaporator coil is inside your home, usually near the air handler or furnace. If the airflow is too low or the refrigerant is low, the coil can get too cold and ice over. Once that happens, air cannot move through the system the way it should. The AC may keep running, cooling performance drops, and the system can start working harder than it should.

Some signs of a frozen coil include weak airflow from the vents, ice on the refrigerant line, water around the indoor unit, or an AC that runs but does not cool well.

If you see ice, turn the AC off and let the system thaw completely. You can also check the air filter and make sure vents are open. But if the coil freezes again, there is likely an underlying problem, such as low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or an airflow issue. At that point, it’s time to have the system checked.

4. Bad AC Capacitor

A bad capacitor is one of the most common electrical issues we see when an AC breaker trips at startup.

The capacitor provides the boost that the compressor and fan motors need to start. When it gets weak, the motor may struggle to start and draw more current than normal. That extra electrical draw can trip the breaker, especially when the AC is starting.

Signs of a bad capacitor can include the outdoor unit humming, the fan not spinning, the AC struggling to start, or the breaker tripping within the first few seconds of a cooling cycle.

This is not a repair we recommend trying yourself. Capacitors can hold an electrical charge even when the power is off, which makes them dangerous to handle without the right training and tools. The good news is that if the capacitor is the problem, it’s usually a straightforward repair for an HVAC technician.

5. Fan Motor Problems

Your AC has more than one motor that helps it run. The indoor blower motor moves air through your home, and the outdoor fan motor helps move heat out of the condenser unit.

If either motor is failing, overheating, or struggling to run, it can pull too much power and trip the breaker. Sometimes the motor runs for a while, then trips the breaker when it gets hot. Other times, if the motor has an internal electrical problem, the breaker may trip almost immediately.

You may notice grinding, screeching, buzzing, weak airflow, or a fan that spins slowly or does not spin at all. These are signs that the motor or a related part, like the capacitor, may need attention.

A technician can test the motor, check how many amps it draws, and determine whether the issue is the motor itself, the capacitor, the wiring, or another electrical component.

6. Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak

Low refrigerant typically doesn’t trip a breaker on its own, but it can cause problems that make the AC work much harder than it should.

Your AC needs the right refrigerant charge to absorb and move heat properly. If the system is low on refrigerant due to a leak, it may run longer cycles, struggle to cool the house, and put extra stress on the compressor. Low refrigerant can also cause the evaporator coil to freeze, which creates another airflow problem.

This type of issue often gets worse over time. The AC may seem to work okay in mild weather, but once the hottest part of summer arrives and the system has to run longer, the breaker may start tripping.

Common signs include poor cooling, longer run times, ice on the refrigerant line, hissing or bubbling sounds, and higher energy bills.

If your AC is low on refrigerant, there is usually a leak somewhere. Refrigerant does not get “used up” the way gas in a car does. A technician should inspect the system, look for the leak, and explain whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

7. Compressor Problems

The compressor is one of the largest electrical loads in your AC system, so when it has a problem, it can definitely trip the breaker.

Sometimes a compressor has trouble starting. This is more common in older systems or those already under stress. When the compressor struggles to start, it can draw a large amount of current at startup, tripping the breaker.

A more serious issue is a compressor that has shorted out or is internally grounded. In that case, the breaker may trip immediately every time the AC tries to start. It may not stay on for even a second.

In our experience, this is one of the biggest reasons not to keep resetting the breaker. If the compressor is failing or shorted, each reset can put additional stress on the system and may cause further damage.

A compressor problem does not always mean you automatically need a new AC, but it does require careful diagnosis.

8. Loose Wiring or an Electrical Short

Sometimes the problem may be an electrical issue inside the AC system.

Loose connections, damaged wires, worn insulation, a bad contactor, or an electrical short can all cause the breaker to trip. These problems can occur at the outdoor unit, indoor unit, disconnect box, or at the electrical connections serving the system.

Electrical issues can be tricky because they do not always follow a clear pattern. The breaker may trip right away, after a few minutes, or seemingly at random. You may also notice buzzing, a burning smell, scorch marks, or melted wiring.

If you notice any of those signs, leave the system off and call a professional. Electrical problems are not something to take chances with, especially when the breaker is repeatedly shutting the system down.

9. The Breaker Itself Is Weak or Failing

In some cases, the breaker itself may be weak, worn out, or heat-sensitive.

Breakers can wear out over time, especially if they have tripped many times before. A weak breaker may trip even when the AC is not pulling more power than it should. This can also happen if the electrical panel is in a hot garage or outdoor area and the breaker is already under added heat stress.

That said, we do not recommend assuming the breaker is the issue right away. Most of the time, the breaker is tripping because it is protecting your home from a real problem. An HVAC technician can check the AC’s electrical draw, and an electrician can inspect the breaker or panel if needed.

One important note: never solve this problem by installing a larger breaker than the circuit is rated for. The breaker is sized to protect the wiring. If the breaker is too large, the wires can overheat before the breaker trips, which creates a serious safety risk.

10. Recent Storm or Power Surge

If your breaker tripped once after a storm, power outage, or electrical surge, it may have been a one-time issue. Power fluctuations can sometimes cause a breaker to trip even if the AC itself is not damaged.

But if the breaker trips again after you reset it, there may be a damaged component inside the system. We often see capacitors, contactors, control boards, and other electrical parts affected after storms or power surges.

If the AC worked fine before the storm and the breaker keeps tripping now, it’s a good idea to have the system checked before running it again.

How to Prevent Your AC Breaker From Tripping

Most AC breaker trips do not come out of nowhere. In our experience, they usually happen after the system has been working harder than it should for a while. The good news is that a little routine maintenance can help keep the electrical load down and catch small problems before they turn into bigger repairs.

Replace Your Air Filter Regularly

A dirty air filter is one of the easiest problems to prevent. When the filter gets clogged, your AC has to work harder to move air through the system. That added strain can lead to longer run times, overheating, and eventually a tripped breaker.

We recommend checking your filter once a month during the cooling season and replacing it every 1 to 3 months, depending on your home, pets, dust, and how often the system runs. Here in Greenville, the long cooling season and heavy pollen can clog filters faster than many homeowners expect.

Keep the Outdoor Unit Clean and Clear

Your outdoor unit needs room to breathe. If it’s surrounded by grass, weeds, leaves, or shrubs, it can have a harder time releasing heat. When the system cannot properly dissipate heat, the compressor may run hotter and draw more power than it should.

Keep the area around the unit clear and trim back plants to allow plenty of airflow.

A good rule of thumb is to keep at least two feet of clearance around the unit. You can also gently rinse dirt and debris off the outside of the condenser coil with a garden hose after turning the unit’s power off. Just avoid using a pressure washer, since it can damage the coil fins.

Don’t Ignore Small Warning Signs

Before a breaker starts tripping, your AC will often show signs that it is under stress. You may notice weak airflow, longer cooling cycles, warm air from the vents, higher energy bills, or new sounds coming from the outdoor unit.

Those signs may not seem urgent at first, but they are worth paying attention to. In our experience, catching these problems early is almost always easier and less expensive than waiting until the system shuts down during the hottest part of summer.

Schedule Annual AC Maintenance

A professional maintenance visit can catch problems that homeowners often miss. During a tune-up, a technician can check electrical connections, test capacitors, measure the amperage drawn by the motors and compressor, clean key components, and look for signs of wear.

These are the exact types of issues that can lead to midsummer breaker trips. A weak capacitor, loose wire, dirty coil, or motor pulling too much power may not be obvious from the outside, but it can often be found during routine maintenance.

Give Your System a Break During Extreme Heat

On the hottest days of the year, your AC may run for long periods of time just to keep up. Setting the thermostat a few degrees higher during extreme heat can shorten run times and reduce strain on the system.

That does not mean your AC should trip the breaker every time it gets hot outside. A properly working system should be able to run safely. But if your unit is older, dirty, or already struggling, reducing the load can help until you can have it inspected.

  • The breaker trips more than once: Resetting it one time may be okay if it was a fluke, but if it trips again, stop resetting it. The breaker is shutting off power for a reason.
  • The breaker trips immediately when the AC turns on: This can point to a faulty capacitor, an electrical short, a compressor problem, or a motor issue. These are not safe DIY repairs.
  • The outdoor unit hums but does not start: A humming sound often means the system is trying to start, but something is preventing it from doing so. In our experience, this is commonly tied to a weak capacitor, failing motor, or compressor issue.
  • The outside fan is not spinning: If the AC is calling for cooling but the outdoor fan is not running, the system can overheat quickly. Turn the AC off and have it inspected.
  • You notice a burning smell, buzzing, or scorch marks: Any sign of overheating or electrical damage should be taken seriously. Leave the system off and call for service.
  • The breaker or electrical panel feels hot: A warm or hot breaker can indicate an overloaded circuit, a loose connection, or a failing breaker. Depending on the issue, you may need an HVAC technician, an electrician, or both.
  • The AC runs for a while and then trips the breaker: This often means the system is overheating or working harder than it should. Dirty coils, low refrigerant, a failing motor, or compressor strain can all cause this.
  • You see ice on the refrigerant line or indoor coil: Ice usually points to an airflow problem or low refrigerant. Let the system thaw, check the filter, and call a technician if the ice comes back.
